Friluftsliv: The Scandinavian Philosophy of Living in Harmony with Nature

Friluftsliv is a Scandinavian philosophy that has gradually spread around the world, inspiring a deeper connection with nature. In this article, we explore Friluftsliv—an enduring Nordic way of life that continues to shape how people experience the outdoors.

Nature is a temple where living pillars
Sometimes let confused words emerge;
Man passes there through forests of symbols
That watch him with familiar eyes…
— Charles Baudelaire

You have probably noticed that Scandinavian countries consistently rank among the world’s happiest nations. But is their high standard of living the only reason behind this?

Our answer is no.

Scandinavian culture places extraordinary importance on living in close harmony with nature. This connection with the natural world plays a fundamental role in the happiness, well-being, and creativity of the people who embrace this lifestyle.

Scientific research also suggests that spending time outdoors can significantly improve both mental and emotional well-being. Inspired by nature’s restorative power, we sought to create an environment that encourages this connection in the Çamlıtepe Project. Following Scandinavian philosophies such as Hygge and Lagom, attention has increasingly turned to Friluftsliv, a Norwegian concept rooted in outdoor living.

In this article, we’ll introduce the Norwegian philosophy of Friluftsliv. If you’re ready, let’s journey into the peaceful landscapes of Scandinavia.

What Does Friluftsliv Mean?

The word Friluftsliv first appeared in 1859 in the poem På Vidderne (On the Heights) by the renowned Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen. He used the term to describe the mental clarity that comes from silence, fresh air, and the tranquility of nature.

Literally translated as “free-air life” or “open-air living,” Friluftsliv is built upon a simple idea: spending meaningful time outdoors while developing a genuine appreciation for the natural world.

Its core principles include:

  • Connecting with nature through direct experience.
  • Enjoying solitude in natural surroundings.
  • Appreciating the beauty of landscapes.
  • Living in closer harmony with the environment.

Throughout Scandinavia, this philosophy has even influenced architecture. Small cabins nestled among forests, mountains, rivers, and open landscapes provide peaceful retreats where people can disconnect from daily routines and reconnect with nature.

Outdoor Living: A Nordic Tradition

Outdoor living has been an integral part of Nordic culture for centuries. Hiking, camping, mushroom foraging, beekeeping, and countless other nature-based activities have long been woven into everyday life.

Inspired by this tradition, we also created dedicated walking trails and natural recreation areas within the Çamlıtepe Project.

In Sweden alone—a country of approximately ten million people—there are 25 non-profit organizations devoted to promoting Friluftsliv, with a combined membership of nearly 1.7 million people.

So how can you bring this peaceful philosophy into your own home?

Create Green Spaces Indoors

Even small touches of nature can transform your living environment into a calmer and more relaxing place. Consider placing indoor plants in suitable corners of your home to create peaceful green spaces.

If you’ve never cared for houseplants before, don’t worry. Begin with low-maintenance species such as succulents, which require minimal watering and are easy to care for.

Caring for plants also encourages mindfulness by helping you become more attentive to natural rhythms such as sunlight, watering, and seasonal growth.

Create a Meditation Corner

Life in busy cities filled with traffic and constant noise often leaves us mentally exhausted. As a result, creating dedicated spaces for relaxation has become increasingly important.

Designing a quiet meditation corner at home aligns perfectly with the philosophy of Friluftsliv. Moments of solitude, reflection, and mental calm are considered essential parts of this Nordic lifestyle.

Prioritize Comfort in Your Outdoor Spaces

Whether you have a balcony, terrace, veranda, or garden, create comfortable seating areas where you can fully enjoy the fresh air.

Soft cushions, cozy pillows, and lightweight furniture that can easily be moved indoors during bad weather help transform these outdoor spaces into peaceful retreats. Comfortable surroundings encourage you to spend more time outside, embracing the restorative qualities of nature that lie at the heart of the Friluftsliv philosophy.
